What Is BIMI?
BIMI stands for Brand Indicators for Message Identification. It is an email authentication standard that lets you display your brand logo next to your emails in supported inboxes. When a recipient sees your message, they also see your verified logo.
BIMI works on top of DMARC. Your domain must have a DMARC policy set to quarantine or reject before mailbox providers display your logo. This requirement ensures only authenticated senders get the visual branding benefit.
Major mailbox providers including Gmail and Yahoo Mail support BIMI. When your email passes DMARC authentication and your BIMI record is valid, recipients see your logo in the inbox list and inside the opened message.
How BIMI Works
1. Enforce DMARC
Set your DMARC policy to p=quarantine or p=reject with pct=100. BIMI requires enforcement before your logo appears in inboxes.
2. Publish a BIMI Record
Add a BIMI TXT record to your DNS at default._bimi.yourdomain.com. The record points to your SVG logo and your mark certificate.
3. Obtain a Mark Certificate
Apply for a Verified Mark Certificate (VMC) or Common Mark Certificate (CMC) from an authorized provider. A VMC proves you own a registered trademark for the logo. A CMC proves you have used the logo for at least a year.
BIMI Requirements
DMARC p=quarantine or p=reject
Your domain must have a DMARC policy set to quarantine or reject, applied to 100% of mail (pct=100). Subdomains must not be set to sp=none. BIMI does not work with a p=none policy.
SVG Logo
Your logo must be an SVG file in the SVG Tiny Portable/Secure (SVG P/S) profile, with a square aspect ratio. Each mailbox provider decides the display size.
Mark Certificate (VMC or CMC)
A Verified Mark Certificate links your logo to a registered trademark. Gmail accepts a VMC or a Common Mark Certificate. Apple Mail requires a VMC. Rules differ by mailbox provider.
DNS TXT Record
Publish the BIMI record in your DNS at default._bimi.yourdomain.com. The record contains the https URLs for your logo and certificate.
Benefits of BIMI
Brand Visibility
Your logo appears next to every authenticated email you send. Recipients recognize your brand instantly in crowded inboxes.
Trust & Credibility
A verified logo signals authenticity. Recipients see your brand identity before they open the message.
Phishing Protection
When your legitimate emails display a verified logo, spoofed messages without the logo stand out. Recipients spot fakes faster.
Email Engagement
A familiar logo helps recipients notice your messages and recognize them as yours.
Frequently Asked Questions
BIMI stands for Brand Indicators for Message Identification. It is an email standard that lets you display your brand logo next to your messages in supported inboxes. BIMI gives recipients a visual cue to verify the sender before opening the email.
BIMI lets a mailbox provider show your logo next to messages that pass DMARC. When a message passes DMARC, your policy is at quarantine or reject, and your BIMI record is valid, a supporting provider can display your logo in the inbox. The logo is an SVG file referenced in your BIMI DNS record.
BIMI requires a DMARC policy set to p=quarantine or p=reject with pct=100 on your organizational domain. You also need an SVG Tiny Portable/Secure logo file hosted on a public https URL and a BIMI TXT record published in your DNS. Gmail and Apple Mail also require a mark certificate. Gmail accepts a VMC or a CMC. Apple Mail requires a VMC.
A Verified Mark Certificate is a digital certificate issued by an authorized certificate authority. It confirms your logo is a registered trademark owned by your organization. Gmail and Apple Mail need a VMC before they display your BIMI logo, though Gmail also accepts a Common Mark Certificate.
First, enforce DMARC at quarantine or reject with pct=100. Second, create an SVG Tiny Portable/Secure logo file and host it on a public https URL. Third, obtain a VMC or CMC from an authorized provider. Fourth, publish a BIMI TXT record at default._bimi.yourdomain.com pointing to your logo and certificate.
BIMI does not directly affect deliverability scores. It does require DMARC enforcement, which improves your sender reputation and authentication results. The combination of enforcement and brand visibility often leads to better engagement metrics over time.
